Everyone is aware of the Opioid Crisis that is overwhelming our communities. Delco Family Wellness is proud to announce that we have developed a comprehensive program offering Suboxone, Vivitrol and treatment by a licensed counselor. Don't become a statistic when there are so many avenues open for treatment and sobriety. Please contact our office for a confidential appointment.
September is Healthy Aging Month. Persons over the age of 65, or those that have medical issues should be aware of the services available to them through Medicare and Medicaid. It is important to monitor your risk factors, such as weight and blood pressure so that any emerging problems can be addressed before they become a health issue. Balancing your diet and exercise is essential to good health. Today, 65 is the new 45 as people are living longer and more productive lives. Don't miss out on a single moment due to poor health!
September is Obesity Awareness Month. Obesity is a national epidemic. There is some aspect of obesity that is genetic, but there are many factors that are within your control. Be mindful of what and how much you are eating and balance that with exercise. Persons that perform heavy work may need more calories than someone that has a desk type job, but everyone is different. Sometimes over eating comes from an emotional issue or food addiction. Please call our office for an appointment to discuss strategies for controlling your weight and reducing the risk of hypertension, heart disease and diabetes though weight management.
September is Recovery Month. Drug and Alcohol Recovery Services are readily available in our community. Addiction is not a disease of choice – who would choose to be an addict? It is also not a sign of moral failure, but the main symptom of a problem with how your brain processes medications. It is chronic but treatable, just like any other chronic physical illness. A combination of medication and therapy offers the best chance to fight this problem, but you have to be ready and committed to healing. Please contact our office to discuss your options.
September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. All men over the age of 50, and African-American men over the age of 40 should be screened annually with a simple blood test. This test can be a part of your annual wellness check-up. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, it is wise to start your screening 5 years prior to the age at which your relative developed cancer. When caught early, prostate cancer is largely curable, but if you skip screenings or ignore symptoms until it is too late, you may waste too many years of a good life.
September is also Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. This is a slowly developing brain disease that is usually present for years before symptoms become noticeable or a person becomes incapacitated. Subtle signs of the disease mimic most signs of normal aging, but with many differences that your health care provider can assist in identifying. As we age, we all have some memory problems and slower reaction times, but when an elder begins to lose what is termed executive functions such as meal planning, managing finances, or long term planning, it is time to consult your provider. Although the vast majority of Alzheimer’s patients are elderly, there is a rare genetic form of the illness that can start as the late 30’s.
